The Met Office has issued a yellow ice warning for eastern Scotland and north-east England until Monday 10am, as freezing temperatures create hazardous conditions on untreated surfaces. The Environment Agency reported 74 flood warnings and 195 flood alerts across England as of Sunday night, with about 330 homes and businesses already flooded despite more than 24,000 being protected.

Following rain and hill snow on Sunday afternoon, temperatures are falling below freezing as skies clear from the west. The Met Office warned in its official statement: «Following a spell of rain and some hill snow during Sunday afternoon, temperatures will fall below freezing as skies clear from the west through the evening and overnight, leading to ice forming on untreated surfaces.»

The weather service cautioned that ice forming on roads and pavements could lead to difficult travelling conditions. People are advised to take extra care, particularly regarding potential black ice and slippery surfaces in affected areas.

Jonathan Day, flood duty manager at the Environment Agency, urged the public to remain vigilant due to the ongoing flood risk across England.

Week Ahead Forecast

Dan Stroud, operational meteorologist at the Met Office, provided a detailed outlook for the coming days. He said: «Monday really is a day of sunny spells and blustery showers. Overnight Monday into Tuesday we will see a frosty start. It's going to be a largely dry day, some decent amounts of winter sunshine.»

However, conditions will deteriorate mid-week. «But it does start to go downhill later in the day, from the south and the west we've got a broad area of cloud and rain pushing in south-west England and South Wales late on Tuesday, during the course of Wednesday this will bring a mix of rain, sleet and hill snow. We do need to keep an eye on this system, there's the potential for snow warnings to be issued,» Stroud explained.

The forecast improves towards the end of the week. «Thursday into Friday will be largely dry with some clear skies, turning milder towards the end of the week,» he added.

The current ice warning follows a series of snow and ice warnings that expired throughout the weekend.
