A task force meets for the first time on Wednesday to support workers facing redundancy at Fife's Mossmorran ethylene plant. The meeting comes after owner ExxonMobil announced the plant's closure next month, putting more than 400 jobs at risk.
ExxonMobil said the Fife Ethylene Plant was no longer economically viable and could not be sold.
Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes said ahead of Wednesday's meeting: «This is a worrying time for the workforce at Mossmorran and they rightly expect urgent action. I met worker representatives earlier this month to assure them that we are doing all we can to support them and the wider community. We have allocated £9 million over three years in our draft Budget to help staff and communities affected by the plant's closure.»
The task force, led by Fife Council, will bring together the UK Government, unions and local partners to agree on support strategies for those affected by the closure.
The government's Partnership Action for Continuing Employment initiative is already providing skills and employability support for workers. Business minister Richard Lochhead will attend the meeting.
