Strictly Come Dancing professional Amy Dowden will undergo a second mastectomy this week. The 35-year-old dancer shared the news via Instagram on Monday, emphasizing that the surgery is not to treat a new cancer diagnosis.
"Following a recent appointment with my incredible medical team, we've decided that I'll be having another mastectomy this week," Dowden said. "They're confident that, all going well, I can expect a straightforward recovery."
The announcement comes nearly two years after Dowden was diagnosed with grade three breast cancer in May 2023. She underwent her first mastectomy in July 2023, followed by eight rounds of chemotherapy and fertility treatment. In February 2024, doctors confirmed no evidence of disease remained, though she faces a five-year monitoring period before an official all-clear.
Return to Strictly
Dowden returned to the dance floor for the current Strictly series, partnered with former Apprentice candidate Thomas Skinner. The pair were eliminated in week two, becoming the first couple to exit the competition. Her previous attempt to return last year ended when a foot injury forced her withdrawal mid-series.
"Once I have healed I look forward to rejoining my strictly family," Dowden said. "Of course I'm going to miss not being there so much but I will be watching from home and look forward to cheering everyone on."
Fellow Strictly professionals quickly rallied with support on social media. Karen Hauer wrote: "Sending all the love," while Dianne Buswell commented: "We love you Amy." Tom Fletcher, Dowden's former dance partner and McFly star, added: "All the love to you my wonderful friend."
