Barcelona have decided they want to make Marcus Rashford's loan from Manchester United permanent after being pleasantly surprised by his early performances. The England forward has impressed the La Liga giants with three goals and five assists in his first ten appearances since joining in January.

The Catalans can secure Rashford permanently for £25 million plus £5 million in add-ons, with United retaining a share of any future sell-on fee. Barcelona initially had reservations about signing the 27-year-old, questioning why United were willing to let him go for such a fee.

Initial doubts overcome

Barcelona chiefs feared something might be wrong with Rashford when United made him available. However, his brother and representative Dwaine personally convinced executives that the academy product wouldn't cause problems at the club.

The Spanish side now believe they have secured a bargain, with Rashford contributing more goals and assists than any teammate this season. Only Metro reports that club president Joan Laporta was "stunned" United were willing to sell for the relatively modest fee.

Manager's praise

Manager Hansi Flick has been effusive in his praise following Rashford's Champions League performance against Newcastle. "I think he's a fantastic player. His skills are unbelievable and his finishing is unbelievable," Flick said.

"When we spoke before the season about what we needed in the team, we felt we needed a player like him. When we had this chance, I said we have to do it. He's an outstanding player."

Player commitment

Rashford appears equally enthusiastic about extending his Barcelona stay despite interest from Paris Saint-Germain. "[I want to stay for] as many [seasons] as possible. We will see," he told TNT Sports.

"I have to focus on trying to do my job and trying to help the team in whichever way I can." The forward is currently with Thomas Tuchel's England squad and came off the bench against Wales.

Historical significance

Rashford has become the first English male player to represent Barcelona since Gary Lineker in the 1980s. His quick adaptation to Spanish football has exceeded expectations after a difficult period at Old Trafford under manager Ruben Amorim.
