A body has been found in the search for an Army sergeant who went missing from his military camp in Wiltshire. Sergeant Alex Cairnie, 30, of the Queen's Royal Hussars regiment, disappeared after leaving Tidworth Camp on Sunday.
Hundreds of people had joined the extensive search operation to locate the missing soldier. The discovery was made on Tuesday evening near Warren Hill, bringing the three-day search to a tragic conclusion.
Body discovered near Warren Hill
Wiltshire Police confirmed the grim discovery in an update released on Tuesday evening. "Sadly, at around 6pm this evening, a body was found near Warren Hill," the force said in a statement.
While formal identification procedures have yet to take place, police believe the body to be that of Sergeant Cairnie. His next of kin have been informed of the discovery and are being supported during this difficult time.
No suspicious circumstances suspected
Police have indicated that no suspicious circumstances are believed to be involved in the death. A file will now be prepared for the coroner as part of standard procedures following the discovery.
Detective Inspector Mark Kent expressed his condolences to the family and thanked all those who participated in the search efforts. "Our thoughts are very much with the family and loved ones of Alex at this extremely difficult time," he said.
The detective inspector also praised the community response to the search operation. "I would like to thank all those involved in the search efforts to locate him," Kent added.
