Ireland's deputy premier Simon Harris (Fine Gael) has condemned threats made against his family as "cowardice". Police confirmed they are investigating the threats which appeared on social media over the weekend.
The Tanaiste said he received "direct threats targeting my family" and described his reaction as both a father and political leader. "As a father, I have very strong views and feelings on this as you can imagine," Harris stated. "As a political leader, I find it unacceptable in every way."
Harris calls threats 'despicable'
Harris emphasised that threatening people constitutes a crime and drew particular attention to threats against children. "Threatening children is despicable. It is cowardice and it is a line that no decent society should tolerate being crossed," he said.
The Fine Gael leader declined to provide further details about the ongoing investigation. "I will not be commenting further at this time on any ongoing Garda investigation," Harris added.
Previous security concerns
This is not the first time Harris has faced threats during his political career. He has previously received threats through social media platforms and endured a phoned bomb threat.
Protesters have also gathered outside his family home where his wife and children reside. The latest incident represents an escalation in targeting his family members directly.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed the investigation, stating: "An Garda Siochana is currently investigating this matter." No further details about the nature or source of the threats have been disclosed.
