Police arrested a man in his 20s on suspicion of attempted murder after an attacker stabbed a woman in Elthorne Park, Islington. The victim, also in her 20s, remains in critical condition in hospital.
Police arrested a second woman, in her 50s, on suspicion of assisting an offender. Both suspects remain in police custody.
Police responded to reports of a stabbing in the north London park around 8.55pm on Monday. Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended the scene, where medics treated the woman for stab wounds before rushing her to hospital.
The suspect knew the victim, police confirmed.
Investigation progress
Chief Superintendent Jason Stewart described the arrest as a significant development. "The arrest of the suspect marks a significant stage in our investigation," he said. "Though a man is in custody, we do understand that this incident has caused extreme concern in the community and we would like to reassure the public there will be extra officers in the area over the next few days as enquiries continue."
Police are increasing visible patrols in the area to reassure residents.
Investigators are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward. "The smallest bit of information could make a real difference," Stewart emphasized.
