A new variety of grape that tastes like a mojito cocktail is set to hit UK shelves next week, offering shoppers an unusual twist on their fruit shopping. The Co-op will be the first retailer to stock the "Mojito Fresh" grapes, which have been developed to mimic the flavour of the popular rum-based drink.
The grapes were given their cocktail-inspired name after Spanish growers noticed their distinctive taste profile resembled the classic mojito. The fruit combines sweetness with a hint of lime, creating what the retailer describes as a unique flavour experience for customers.
Spanish growers create hybrid variety
The innovative grapes were developed through hybridisation techniques by Spanish growers, who combined different grape varieties to achieve the mojito-like taste. The fruit development firm Uvasdoce Fresh created the variety, which first launched in Spain last year as part of their new "Fresh Mocktail Collection".
The grapes will be available for just three weeks in selected Co-op stores, priced at £2.90 as part of the retailer's premium Irresistible range. The limited availability is due to the seasonal growing window for this particular variety.
Limited time offer for cocktail fans
Kate Byrne-Fletcher, Co-op's head of fresh produce, said the new variety would appeal to mojito enthusiasts looking for a healthy alternative. "This new variety is a must-try for mojito cocktail fans, and we're thrilled to be adding it into our fresh fruit aisle for our members and customers to enjoy as a healthy snack or freezing and adding to summery drinks," she explained.
The retailer expects strong demand for the unusual fruit, with Byrne-Fletcher predicting they will "fly off the shelves" during their brief availability. Customers can enjoy the grapes as a fresh snack or freeze them to add to summer beverages for an authentic mojito twist.
