Most Expensive Fighter Jet in the World Remains Grounded After Emergency Landing

KERALA- A British Royal Navy F-35B stealth fighter jet remains grounded at Thiruvananthapuram airport (TRV) more than 48 hours after executing an emergency landing Sunday morning.

The aircraft diverted from its mission due to critically low fuel levels, forcing an unscheduled touchdown at the Kerala facility.

F-35 Emergency Landing

The F-35B belonged to the HMS Prince of Wales Carrier Strike Group, which recently concluded joint naval exercises with the Indian Navy in the Indo-Pacific region.

Military and aviation experts describe the fuel shortage incident as unusual but not unprecedented for carrier-based operations. The aircraft was attempting to return to its home carrier when fuel constraints necessitated the emergency diversion.

Weather conditions reportedly prevented the fighter from safely recovering aboard the HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier. Poor visibility and rough seas likely contributed to the pilot’s decision to seek alternative landing options rather than risk a dangerous carrier approach.

Mechanical Issues

Sources indicate suspected mechanical failure has extended the aircraft’s ground time beyond normal operational parameters. British maintenance crews are working to service the fighter for its return to the carrier strike group.

The extended 48-hour grounding period represents an uncommon situation for foreign military aircraft, particularly given the F-35’s status as the world’s most expensive fighter program.

F-35 Specifications and Capabilities

The F-35B variant features short takeoff and vertical landing capabilities, enabling operations from aircraft carriers without traditional catapult launch systems.

Lockheed Martin designed the Lightning II family as a fifth-generation, single-engine stealth multirole combat aircraft available in 3 primary configurations.

The aircraft distinguishes itself from previous fighter generations through radar-evading technology and advanced sensor fusion systems.

Israel currently deploys F-35 aircraft in combat operations against Iranian targets, demonstrating the platform’s operational effectiveness in real-world scenarios. The F-35 program represents the largest fifth-generation stealth fighter initiative by operational aircraft numbers globally.

The Indian Air Force characterised the emergency landing as a “normal occurrence” and confirmed its assistance to the stranded aircraft. Indian aviation authorities coordinated with British personnel to ensure proper ground support and security measures during the extended stay.

Diplomatic Implications

Earlier this year, US President Donald Trump offered to sell F-35 aircraft to India during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Trump stated that the US was “paving the way to ultimately provide India with the F-35 stealth fighters,” marking a significant shift from previous American restrictions on foreign F-35 acquisitions.

The HMS Prince of Wales Carrier Strike Group’s presence in the Indo-Pacific underscores growing Western military engagement in the region. The carrier group’s joint exercises with Indian naval forces reflect strengthening defence cooperation between Britain and India amid evolving geopolitical dynamics in the strategic waterway.
