Armed police have cordoned off a central Oslo street following an explosion that left undetonated explosives at the scene. Emergency services rushed to Pilestredet in the Norwegian capital, with bomb disposal experts working to secure the area.
Authorities sent emergency alerts to residents' mobile phones warning them to stay away from windows due to the ongoing explosive threat. The police confirmed that whilst one device has exploded, additional explosives remain at the location that have not been detonated.
Police investigation underway
Police operations manager Øyvind Hammervold told TV2 that investigators are working on the theory that a hand grenade was planted at the scene. Pictures posted on social media by passersby appear to show an undetonated grenade on the street.
One person has been arrested in connection with the incident, according to reports. Police carried out a controlled detonation around 9pm to safely dispose of the remaining explosive device.
Strategic location raises concerns
The explosion occurred just 500 metres from both the royal palace and the Israeli embassy in a busy area near a university campus. No injuries have been reported despite the central location of the incident.
Tram services have been disrupted, with nearby trams evacuated and the wider tram network across the city affected. During the incident, drones were spotted flying above Oslo city centre, according to Daily Record.
