A police officer narrowly escaped serious injury when a quadbike rider deliberately rammed a patrol car twice in Liverpool on Tuesday evening. The dramatic confrontation ended with the quadbike flipping over onto its side across the police car bonnet after the suspect reversed into a parked car.

Officers were on patrol in the Kensington area when they spotted a man pushing a quadbike with no registration plate. The man rode away but was quickly located by officers in their patrol car.

The quadbike driver allegedly rammed into the police car, reversed into a parked car, and then struck the patrol car a second time. A police officer who had exited the vehicle to arrest the rider only narrowly avoided being hit by the quadbike as it mounted the bonnet and flipped over.

Suspect arrested on multiple charges

A 29-year-old man from Everton was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and without insurance, and acquiring, using or possessing criminal property. The suspect was taken to hospital for assessment before being discharged and taken into police custody.

Chief Inspector Steve Robinson of Merseyside Police said: "Thankfully no officers were hurt during the course of this incident, but the results of the suspect's reckless actions could have been far worse. We will never tolerate people who put the safety of themselves and other road users at risk by driving uninsured vehicles with no licence in a dangerous manner."

Enhanced police patrols

According to Liverpool Echo, the incident occurred on Butler Crescent around 9pm during enhanced policing patrols as part of the Safer Streets Summer initiative. The programme provides dedicated police teams across England and Wales as part of the government's Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee.

Robinson emphasised that officers face challenging situations daily but should never have to deal with suspects deliberately ramming their vehicles. He said the force is determined to bring the person responsible to justice.
