Justin Rose achieved a historic milestone on Sunday, becoming the oldest European to win on the PGA Tour at age 45 with his victory at the St Jude Championship. The Englishman secured his 12th PGA Tour title in dramatic fashion, overcoming a three-hole playoff against US Open champion JJ Spaun after both finished tied at 16-under par.

Rose's triumph came after Tommy Fleetwood appeared set to claim his maiden PGA Tour victory, holding a two-shot lead with just three holes remaining. However, Fleetwood's par at the 16th hole allowed his competitors to close the gap, ultimately setting up the thrilling playoff finish.

Mental fortitude under pressure

The veteran golfer revealed the mindset that carried him to victory during his post-tournament press conference. "I've always known I've had that. Like I get nervous for the best of them, you know, like I feel nervous at times, but I know that when it matters, I still got it," Rose explained. "I kind of get, I feel better and better and better as it gets more and more important."

Rose emphasised his physical condition remains strong despite his age, expressing optimism about future opportunities. "I don't want to keep saying that because I'm actually, I feel like I'm moving well. The body's feeling good. I'm training well. Yeah, I feel like there could be, you know, listen, it could be a good run of golf still," he said.

Career recognition and relationships

Rose had previously finished second to Rory McIlroy at the Masters in April, showing his continued ability to compete at the highest level. McIlroy offered effusive praise for his Ryder Cup teammate following their Masters encounter, as Belfastlive reports.

"He's [Rose] a great champion. He has displayed so much grace throughout his career," the Northern Irishman said. "You know, selfishly, I was happy that it was another Euro in the playoff. We're on a good run at the minute. We're [in a] Ryder Cup year and all that."

Dramatic playoff finish

Rose secured victory by birdying the final two holes of the playoff, demonstrating the clutch performance that has defined his career. "I hit a couple good putts in regulation and in the first playoff hole as well. Obviously JJ dropped a bomb on me, I topped him," Rose reflected on his dramatic finish.

The victory represents significant validation for Rose's continued preparation and competitive approach. "That's why I practice. That's why I play. I've been saying for some time now, obviously Augusta, when I bring my best, I know I'm good enough to play and to compete, and to now win against the best players in the world," he concluded.
