Sir Keir Starmer has condemned Donald Trump's plan to impose tariffs on the UK and multiple European nations unless Washington reaches a deal to purchase Greenland from Denmark.

Both Sir Keir Starmer and the Prime Minister called the tariff threat "completely wrong" and pledged to pursue the matter directly with the US administration.

Trump announced he would levy a ten percent tariff "on any and all goods" from February 1, rising to 25 percent from June 1. The tariffs target the UK, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Finland until a deal is reached for the US to acquire Greenland. The US president claimed these nations had "journeyed to Greenland, for purposes unknown".

UK Position on Greenland

The Prime Minister set out the UK's stance clearly: "Our position on Greenland is very clear – it is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and its future is a matter for the Greenlanders and the Danes."

The government also emphasized Arctic security concerns. "We have also made clear that Arctic Security matters for the whole of Nato and allies should all do more together to address the threat from Russia across different parts of the Arctic", the Prime Minister stated.

Strong Condemnation

The Prime Minister rejected the use of tariffs against allies. "Applying tariffs on allies for pursuing the collective security of Nato allies is completely wrong. We will of course be pursuing this directly with the US administration", the Prime Minister said.

Starmer echoed this position, calling Trump's plan "completely wrong" and confirming the UK was "pursuing this directly" with Washington.
