UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy visited Kyiv to mark the first anniversary of the UK's 100-year partnership agreement with Ukraine. He announced £20 million in fresh aid for the country's battered energy infrastructure. The visit comes as Russian missile strikes continue to target Ukraine's energy infrastructure daily.
Lammy toured a site Russian missiles struck, addressed a summit of business leaders, and held talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky. The discussions focused on Moscow's relentless bombardment of energy facilities and strategies to strengthen protection against the attacks.
The £20 million will bolster Ukraine's energy infrastructure at a critical moment.
The 100-year partnership agreement, which the countries signed a year ago, fosters closer defence and trade ties between the two nations.
UK's commitment beyond solidarity
Lammy emphasized the depth of the UK's engagement. "I am privileged to be here to mark the first anniversary of our 100-year partnership because Ukraine's security is our security," he said during the visit.
He outlined a vision of comprehensive partnership. "This is more than just solidarity. Our friendship is a shared stand against Russian aggression across Europe. But today we go further: unlocking investment, deepening joint action, and reaffirming our leadership of the Coalition of the Willing. The UK and Ukraine stand shoulder to shoulder as true partners for freedom, committed to a just peace and a stronger, safer future for both our nations."
Zelensky's response
President Zelensky welcomed the energy support package. Writing on social media, he said he "discussed Russia's daily missile strikes on our energy infrastructure and ways to strengthen protection against them."
He expressed gratitude for the timing of the UK's assistance. "We are grateful for the UK's decision to provide an energy support package for Ukraine right now, when it is most needed," Zelensky wrote. "I thank the United Kingdom, its Government, and its people for all the assistance to our country," he added.
