Carlos Alcaraz claimed his sixth Grand Slam title on Sunday night, defeating Jannik Sinner to win the US Open and reclaim the world No 1 ranking. The 22-year-old Spaniard dominated proceedings at Flushing Meadows in what marked the third instalment of their captivating 2025 rivalry.

The victory completed a compelling trilogy between the two young stars, who had previously met in Grand Slam finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon this year. Alcaraz had mounted a remarkable comeback to win the French Open after being two sets down, whilst Sinner claimed revenge at Wimbledon with a commanding four-set victory.

Dominant display in New York

According to The Independent, Alcaraz won 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in a match The Mirror characterised as a "devastating performance" by the Spaniard. Alcaraz broke Sinner in the opening game and raced to take the first set 6-2, immediately establishing his authority on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court.

Sinner responded brilliantly in the second set, finally securing a break of his own to level the match. Both players had cancelled each other out with precision and power, leaving the contest on a knife edge.

Third set masterclass

Alcaraz then produced arguably the greatest set of his career to swing momentum decisively back in his favour. He broke Sinner twice in the third set, with the Italian winning just one game when already trailing 5-0, as Alcaraz played utterly flawless tennis.

The third set performance drew comparisons to tennis at its absolute pinnacle. Even legends like Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael przez cały czas in their prime could not have fared better against such brilliance.

Decisive fourth set

The crucial moment arrived in the fifth game of the fourth set when Sinner double-faulted under pressure, handing Alcaraz the opening he needed. Sinner then overhit his next effort, gifting the Spaniard the decisive break that would seal victory.

From that point onwards, there was only ever going to be one winner. Alcaraz maintained control to close out his second US Open title and leapfrog Sinner back to world No 1.

The victory establishes Alcaraz's growing dominance in men's tennis, with more major titles expected to follow. Sinner will likely bounce back from this defeat, but this night belonged entirely to his Spanish rival.
