Hillary Clinton (Democrat), Trump's 2016 presidential opponent, has made a stunning admission that she would nominate Donald Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize if he successfully ends the Russia-Ukraine war. The former presidential candidate made the shocking offer in an interview released on Friday, hours before Trump's planned summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

Clinton's offer comes with strict conditions that Ukraine must not be forced to concede territory to Russia. She told the Raging Moderates podcast that any peace deal must avoid capitulation to Vladimir Putin.

Clinton's specific conditions

"I understand, from everything I read, that he would very much like to receive the Nobel Peace Prize," Clinton told podcast co-host Jessica Tarlov. "Honestly, if he could bring about the end to this terrible war, if he could end it without putting Ukraine in a position where it had to concede its territory to the aggressor, but instead could really stand up to Putin… I'd nominate him for a Nobel Peace Prize."

The former US Secretary of State emphasised that Trump could be the "architect" of a deal that protects Ukrainian sovereignty. "If we could pull that off, if President Trump were the architect of that, I'd nominate him for a Nobel Peace Prize," she said.

Clinton stressed her primary goal remains preventing Ukrainian capitulation. "Because my goal here is to not allow capitulation to Putin, aided and abetted by the United States," she added.

Diplomatic challenges ahead

Meeting Clinton's conditions represents a significant challenge for Trump's peace efforts. The Independent reports that Trump has struggled to get Russia to meaningfully engage in peace talks and has encountered difficulties with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Days before his planned summit with Putin in Alaska, Trump suggested there "would be some land swapping" or territorial concessions as part of any deal. However, he later told European leaders he aims to secure a ceasefire without discussing territorial concessions.

The timing of Clinton's comments adds weight to her bipartisan gesture, coming just hours before Trump's high-stakes meeting with the Russian leader. The Independent notes that Trump made ending the Ukraine war a central campaign promise during his presidential bid.
