BBC Breakfast presenter Ben Boulos announced the death of Britain's last surviving World War Two Victoria Cross holder during Sunday's programme. John Cruickshank passed away at age 105, marking the end of an era for the nation's highest military decoration.

The Aberdeen resident was one of 181 individuals awarded the Victoria Cross during WWII. His death means no living recipients from the Second World War remain.

Heroic wartime mission

Flight Lieutenant Cruickshank earned his Victoria Cross for extraordinary bravery in June 1944. While piloting a Catalina flying boat, he attacked a German U-boat over the Norwegian Sea despite suffering 72 injuries during the engagement.

He and his crew successfully destroyed the submarine, though navigator John Dixon was killed in the mission. Cruickshank's determination to continue fighting despite his severe wounds exemplified the courage that earned him Britain's highest military honour.

Modest military icon

BBC correspondent Katie Hunter highlighted Cruickshank's humble nature in a special feature broadcast during the programme. She explained how he was praised for his determination, fortitude and devotion to duty when awarded the Victoria Cross.

In a 2008 BBC interview, Cruickshank played down his actions. "You don't get involved in that kind of thing thinking of any decorations or any recognition of any type," he said. "It was regarded as duty."

Private farewell

RAF group captain John Kemp, who knew Cruickshank for three decades, described him as "a very stoic aviator" and "a great RAF icon". He praised Cruickshank's character as quiet and private, but with "an excellent, terrific sense of humour".

Last year, a Catalina plane flew over Cruickshank's home to commemorate 80 years since his Victoria Cross award. The family announced he passed away last week and that a private funeral would be held.
