Counter terrorism police arrested a 31-year-old man at Manchester Airport on Thursday in connection with last month's terrorist attack at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue. The arrest marks the seventh individual detained in the ongoing investigation into the October 2 attack that left two dead and three seriously injured.

Police secured a warrant of further detention on Saturday, allowing them to hold the suspect for questioning until Thursday, December 4. The man was apprehended after arriving on an inbound flight and faces suspicion of commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism.

Assistant Chief Constable Rob Potts, who has operational responsibility for Counter Terrorism Policing North West, said in a statement: «At around midday, officers from Counter Terrorism Policing North West arrested a 31-year-old man in connection with the appalling terrorist attack that took place at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue.» He added: «The loved ones of Mr Daulby and Mr Cravitz have been updated on this development, as have those who were seriously injured in the attack.»

The October attack

The terrorist attack on October 2 resulted in the deaths of Adrian Daulby and Melvin Cravitz. Three other men suffered serious injuries and required hospital treatment, though they have since been discharged. Police shot dead the attacker, Jihad Al Shamie, at the scene.

Previous arrests

This latest arrest brings the total number of people detained in connection with the attack to seven. Five individuals have been released without charge. A 30-year-old man arrested on October 9 on suspicion of failing to disclose information contrary to the Terrorism Act 2000 remains on bail.

Potts appealed for public assistance: «Our investigation is continuing, and I would once again appeal for anyone with information that they think could assist our enquiries to please come forward.» Anyone with information can contact police via the Major Incident Public Portal or by calling 0161 856 3946.
