Two brothers used a "high level of violence" when assaulting police officers at Manchester Airport, a jury has been told. The incident occurred after officers responded to an earlier altercation at a Starbucks cafe in Terminal 2.
Mohammed Fahir Amaaz, 20, and Muhammad Amaad, 26, are accused of striking out at three police officers who had traced them to the airport's car park payment area on July 23 last year. The brothers had initially been involved in an incident at the terminal's Starbucks cafe.
Violence at Starbucks cafe
Liverpool Crown Court heard that Amaaz had delivered a headbutt to the face of a member of the public and punched him inside the coffee shop. Police officers who were already present at the airport later tracked down the brothers at the car park payment machines.
Opening the prosecution case on Friday, Paul Greaney KC described how three officers approached the defendants. Two armed officers, Pc Zachary Marsden and Pc Ellie Cook, were accompanied by unarmed Pc Lydia Ward.
Resistance during arrest attempt
The officers attempted to move Amaaz away from a payment machine to arrest him, but he resisted arrest. His brother Amaad then intervened in the confrontation, the court was told.
"Both defendants assaulted Pc Marsden," Mr Greaney said. "In the moments that followed, the first defendant also assaulted Pc Cook and then Pc Ward too, breaking her nose."
Charges against both brothers
Amaaz faces charges of assaulting Pc Marsden and Pc Ward, causing them actual bodily harm. He is also accused of assaulting Pc Cook and the earlier assault of Abdulkareem Ismaeil at the Starbucks cafe.
Amaad is alleged to have assaulted Pc Marsden, causing actual bodily harm. Both men, from Rochdale, Greater Manchester, deny all the allegations against them.
