The party atmosphere is taking hold of west London again as the second day of Notting Hill Carnival kicks off with the main parade. Colourful costumes, dancing and music are filling the streets for Europe's biggest street party, celebrating Caribbean culture and history.
More than one million people are expected to attend the event, which has been running for more than 50 years. The carnival showcases international participation with Brazilian bands, Caribbean bands, and performers from around the world in beautiful costumes.
Security measures amid celebrations
According to the Express, 7,000 police officers have been deployed for Monday's main parade day. The heavy security presence follows 140 arrests made on Sunday's children's day, with 15 of those arrests for assaults on police officers requiring one officer to receive hospital treatment.
MyLondon reports that 13 arrests were made using live facial recognition technology on carnival approaches. The arrests covered various categories including weapons, drugs, and public order offences.
Carnival spirit continues
Carnival-goer Jeff Sam, 74, said: "We are here to enjoy ourselves and we know it's going to be a fantastic day, something you have never dreamed in your life. You're going to see Brazilian bands, you're going to see Caribbean bands, you're going to see bands from all over the world coming and performing in beautiful costumes."
Derillio Alexander, 33, who is normally based in Amsterdam, said he was performing at Carnival with Ebony Steel Band. "It's gonna be a big party," he said. "We're gonna bust the place. It's always a pleasure to be here and we're gonna do our thing."
