Police in Kent uncovered a sophisticated drug operation after spotting missing screws on a moped that led them to a hidden cocaine stash. Victor Pereria Da Luz, 26, was arrested in Tunbridge Wells after officers noticed his erratic driving behaviour in June.

The crucial breakthrough came when sharp-eyed officers spotted screws missing from the vehicle's panel during a routine search. This tell-tale sign prompted them to investigate further, leading to the discovery of a concealed compartment in the steering column.

A black sock containing 12 vials of cocaine was found hidden inside the moped. Police also seized almost £900 in cash during the arrest.

Court proceedings and sentencing

Pereria Da Luz, from Chislehurst, Bromley, pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court to possessing cocaine with intent to supply and possessing criminal property. He also admitted driving without a licence or insurance.

On August 11, he was sentenced to two years and seven months' imprisonment. The court heard how the sophisticated concealment method had been designed to evade detection.

Police detection expertise

Sergeant Ed Kavanagh of the Tunbridge Wells Neighbourhood Task Force highlighted the evolving nature of drug enforcement. "Drug dealers like Pereria Da Luz frequently use vehicles to conceal cocaine and other illicit substances, often utilising increasingly elaborate hiding places," he said.

He emphasised how police training has adapted to counter these tactics. "However, at the same time our officers are trained to spot the signs and use their expert knowledge, keen instincts, and evolving search tactics, to consistently identify suspects and uncover their stashes."

Kavanagh stressed the broader impact of such operations. "Every successful search is a step closer to dismantling the networks that fuel drug-related harm in our communities."

Operation details

Kent Live reports that the incident occurred specifically on June 4 at Crawford Close, with plain clothed patrols following the suspect before the stop. The suspect reportedly showed nervous behaviour and immediately tried to lock his mobile phone when approached by officers.

Footage from Kent Police shows officers conducting the search of Pereria Da Luz and his moped. The discovery demonstrates how police expertise continues to stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated drug concealment methods.
