A British model has been sentenced to three years in prison after admitting to smuggling nearly £200,000 worth of drugs into Spain. Clara Wilson, 36, from Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire, was caught at Barcelona's El Prat airport with more than 34 kilos of cannabis in her suitcase.

Wilson was arrested after arriving on a flight from Bangkok, Thailand. Police discovered 60 vacuum-packed packages containing 34,074 grams of cannabis during a routine search of her luggage.

Plea bargain agreement

Wilson accepted a plea deal that reduced her sentence from the prosecution's original demand of four years to three years plus a £185,000 fine. The fine matches the estimated street value of the cannabis she attempted to smuggle into Spain.

Defence lawyer Yaiza Garcia requested the sentence be suspended, but a state prosecutor opposed the application. A decision on the suspension has been postponed to a later date.

Growing trend concerns

Wilson's case forms part of a concerning pattern of young British women caught in international drug smuggling operations. The OnlyFans model has been warned she faces an additional two months in jail if she fails to pay the six-figure fine.

Time already served at Brians 1 Prison near Barcelona will be deducted from any additional sentence. Wilson joins several other UK nationals who have been arrested in recent months for similar offences across different countries.

Other recent cases

Bella Culley, 19, from County Durham, was arrested in Georgia after allegedly carrying 14 kilos of cannabis, while Charlotte Lee May, 21, remains in custody in Sri Lanka after being caught with 46 kilos of cannabis. Both cases involved flights originating from Thailand.

The cases highlight what authorities describe as an alarming trend of young British nationals being recruited for international drug trafficking operations, particularly along routes from Thailand to Europe.
