Angela Rayner has defended Sir Keir Starmer as "doing the job for Britain" as the Prime Minister approaches his first year in office. The Deputy Prime Minister acknowledged the demanding nature of leading the country whilst dismissing any personal ambitions for the top job.

Speaking to ITV's Lorraine programme on Wednesday, Rayner was asked whether the Prime Minister appears tired after nearly 12 months in Downing Street. She responded by highlighting the physical toll of the role, saying: "Have you ever seen a prime minister after a year or two in government?"

Rayner rules out top job

When asked about her own political ambitions, Rayner was emphatic in her response. "People always say to me, do you want to be Prime Minister? Not a chance. It'll age me by 10 years within six months," she said.

The Deputy Prime Minister praised Starmer's international efforts, citing his work to repair relationships in Europe and secure trade deals. She highlighted his role in tackling potential US tariffs that "would have damaged our economy again" under the previous government.

Challenging first year in office

Rayner's defence comes as polling expert Professor Sir John Curtice described Starmer's first year as "the worst start for any newly elected prime minister". Speaking to Times Radio, Curtice noted that the Prime Minister was "never especially popular" and that "the public still don't know what he stands for."

Despite the criticism, Rayner emphasised Starmer's global diplomatic efforts. "The Prime Minister's been here, there and everywhere, doing the job for Britain," she said, defending his extensive travel schedule and international engagement.

Personal mission drives Rayner

Rayner explained her own political motivations, describing herself as "passionate" about workers' rights and council housing. She reflected on her journey from her background to becoming Deputy Prime Minister, calling her election as an MP "incredible".

"To be elected as an MP from my background was incredible," she said. "Having that opportunity to serve my community that have raised me, looked after me, given me opportunities, and I don't forget that."
