The UK faces significant disruption as severe weather brings flooding, heavy rain and strong winds across large parts of the country. More than 20 red flood warnings are in place across the West Midlands and northwest England, meaning flooding is expected and residents should take immediate action.

Up to 80mm of rain could fall overnight in some areas, with north Wales and northern England under a yellow rain warning until 3am on Sunday. Dozens of flood alerts are active across England and Wales as the severe conditions develop.

Wind gusts of up to 75mph could worsen the flooding situation. A yellow wind warning covers the Midlands, Wales and northern England from 3pm on Saturday until 4am on Sunday.

Temperature drop and weekend conditions

Temperatures will be noticeably cooler than Friday's balmy conditions, when 27.8C was recorded in St James's Park in central London. The dramatic change marks a sharp shift from the recent warm weather across the country.

Hail and thunder are possible on Sunday morning, particularly in northern Scotland where windy conditions are expected to continue. The unsettled weather will affect different regions throughout the weekend period.

Matthew Lehnert, the Met Office's chief meteorologist, said: "Through this period, 20-30mm of rain is expected to fall widely across Wales and northern England, with some locations perhaps seeing 60-80mm. There is also a chance that a short spell of strong, gusty winds could develop as the area of low pressure moves east."

Weather outlook

Sunday is set to be drier and colder than Saturday once the stormy conditions clear. The severe weather system should move through during the early hours of Sunday morning.

High pressure is expected to build by Sunday afternoon and into Monday, bringing more settled weather conditions. However, northern Scotland will likely see continued cloud and rain on Monday.

Temperatures are forecast to remain below average for the time of year throughout the coming week. The first frosts of autumn are possible as the cooler conditions establish themselves, with southeast Kent potentially experiencing persistent showers until midweek.
