Anthony Gordon received a straight red card in Newcastle United's clash against Liverpool at St James' Park after a challenge on Virgil van Dijk. The former Everton winger was initially shown a yellow card for the first-half incident but VAR recommended referee Simon Hooper review the decision on the pitchside monitor.

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer delivered a scathing verdict on Gordon's challenge. He wrote on social media: "What a stupid challenge man. It's a red card all day." His post included three angry face emojis, emphasising his frustration with the decision.

VAR upgrade decision

Referee Simon Hooper upgraded the yellow card to red after reviewing the footage. In his on-pitch announcement, Hooper explained: "After review, the Newcastle United number 10 commits a serious foul play challenge. The challenge is with speed and makes clear contact on the Liverpool number 4's calf. My final decision is red card to Newcastle United number 10."

Sky Sports co-commentator Chris Sutton supported the decision, describing it as a "wild challenge" that looked worse with each replay. He called the tackle "unnecessary" and expressed surprise if Gordon had remained on the pitch.

Three-game suspension

The red card carries significant consequences for Gordon and Newcastle. He will miss the remainder of the Liverpool match plus the next three Premier League fixtures due to the suspension.

Chronicle Live reports Gordon will be absent for games against Leeds United, Wolves and Bournemouth. The suspension represents a major blow for Newcastle as they navigate the busy festive period without one of their key attacking players.
