The Met Office has predicted snowfall across numerous UK regions tonight and into Saturday, with yellow rain warnings remaining active for Northern Ireland and southwest England. An additional rain alert has been issued for early next week as wintry conditions arrive before February begins.

The forecaster identified the northwest and southwest as most likely to see snow showers, with hill snow expected across northern areas. Higher ground in eastern Scotland could see the largest rainfall totals, while high ground in the north will experience snow rather than rain.

The UK is currently battling torrential downpours and gale-force winds, with an ongoing risk of flooding in sensitive areas. Temperatures remain around seasonal norms for most regions, though colder conditions persist in the far northeast.

Why the weather remains changeable

Dan Holley, Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster, outlined the reasons for continued unsettled conditions. «We'll continue to see a strong and south-shifted jet stream well into next week, which will steer further low pressure systems close to the UK from the North Atlantic,» he said.

«These will bring further spells of rain at times, accompanied by strengthening winds, with an ongoing risk of flooding in sensitive areas,» Holley added. «There will also be some hill snow at times in the north as this wet weather engages with colder air here.»

Weekend and next week outlook

Low pressure systems will dominate through the weekend. Saturday will see rain and showers across much of Britain, becoming more scattered on Sunday.

Nick Finnis, a meteorologist from Netweather.tv, detailed expectations for the coming days. «With low pressure close to the southwest, further rain looks to push in from the south or southwest early next week, reaching most areas, generally rain heaviest and most persistent towards the south and west,» he said.

«Though with a southeasterly or easterly flow in the north picking up moisture off the North Sea, like this week, higher ground of eastern Scotland could again see the largest rainfall totals,» Finnis added. «Snow rather than rain falling over high ground in the north too, as cold air spreads over the North Sea from the east at times.»
