Nationwide Building Society has pledged to keep all 605 of its branches open until at least the start of 2030, bucking the trend as rival banks continue to shut sites across the UK. The commitment ensures customers can continue to bank in-branch alongside digital and phone options.

Nationwide's network will remain intact until at least the start of 2030. The building society stated: "All 605 of them are remaining open until at least the start of 2030. Keeping our branches open is one of the reasons we won Which? Banking Brand of the Year 2025."

Industry-leading commitment

The pledge directly contrasts with ongoing closures across the banking sector. Which? named Nationwide Banking Brand of the Year 2025. The UK Customer Satisfaction Index also rated Nationwide the UK's best high street banking provider for customer satisfaction in July 2025, surveying 19 banking providers.

Dame Debbie Crosbie, CEO of Nationwide, emphasized the importance of maintaining physical locations. "Our customers can be confident that they can bank with us whichever way they choose. Branches are important to our customers, to communities, and to the health of our high streets. That's why Nationwide will continue to keep branches open in addition to our investment in online and telephone channels," she said.

Flexibility and choice

Nationwide included a caveat for unavoidable circumstances. The building society stated: "There may be circumstances beyond our control that mean we have to close a branch. Or relocate it in the same town. We'll only do so when there's no other workable option."

The building society highlighted customer choice as central to its strategy. "That's why we're ensuring they will be here today, and here tomorrow. So you can choose how to bank – in branch, in our app, or over the phone," Nationwide stated.
