A 23-year-old guest died after falling from a third-floor balcony during a fire at a Tenerife holiday hotel last night. Nearly 500 tourists, including British holidaymakers, were evacuated from the Melia Costa Atlantis Hotel in Puerto de la Cruz.

The victim plunged to his death while attempting to escape the blaze that broke out in the four-star hotel on Venezuela Avenue. Authorities have not yet revealed the guest's nationality.

Emergency response

Emergency services received calls just after 9pm last night and responded with firefighters, ambulances and police units. The coordinated response led to the swift evacuation of all 490 guests from the popular holiday destination.

Firefighters brought the fire under control and extinguished the blaze before ventilating the affected room. All evacuated guests were able to return safely to the hotel once the emergency was resolved.

Investigation underway

Local reports suggest a mattress in one of the rooms caught fire, though the exact cause remains under investigation. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about hotel safety protocols in Spanish tourist destinations.

The tragedy adds to a recent pattern of balcony-related deaths at Spanish hotels, with several incidents reported in Ibiza during the summer months. Tenerife remains one of the most popular destinations for British tourists visiting the Canary Islands.
