Two 18-year-old men have appeared in court accused of plotting terrorist attacks on a mosque and a Jewish cemetery in Cardiff. Rhys Edwards and Talan Gethin Vincent appeared via videolink at the Old Bailey today, charged with preparation of acts of terrorism between October 1 and November 16. Both indicated they will plead not guilty.
The teenagers are accused of targeting the Madina Mosque and a Jewish cemetery in Cardiff. According to the charges, they «researched and visited attack locations and made arrangements to obtain firearms».
Alleged Attack Plans
Prosecutor Christopher Hewertson outlined the alleged plot in court. The teenagers allegedly researched obtaining an AR15 automatic weapon and sophisticated 3D printing equipment to potentially manufacture gun parts.
The alleged plan involved reversing a van with false number plates to the doors of the Madina Mosque to prevent escape, then opening fire with automatic weapons before executing a planned getaway.
Legal Proceedings
Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb, presiding over the preliminary hearing, told the defendants: «counsel has indicated that both of you deny any acts of terrorism». She instructed them to «co-operate with your lawyers to prepare you case for trial to make sure that your interests are fully looked after».
Edwards and Vincent appeared from HMP Thameside. They will remain in custody for a pre-trial hearing at the Old Bailey on March 27.
Trial Timeline
A three-week trial has been scheduled to begin on February 1, 2027 at Bristol Crown Court. Both defendants are former pupils of Ysgol Gyfun Glantaf in Cardiff.
