A woman and her elderly mother witnessed a horrific stabbing in their car after stopping to help a man being chased in broad daylight on a Merseyside street. The victim was stabbed twice in the leg while sitting in the back seat of their vehicle during the September 2 attack on Park Road South in Birkenhead.
The woman was driving around 5pm when she spotted an 18-year-old man walking in the middle of the road, trying car door handles and screaming. "I was driving along the road when I saw this young lad was walking up the middle of the road, trying car handles, screaming. I thought that maybe he was on drugs," she said. When she noticed two people on a moped pursuing him, she made a split-second decision to intervene.
"The lad was shouting, they're going to kill me. I started shouting for the lad to get in the car. As he was running towards my car, one of the lads got off the bike. My eyes were drawn to his hand and I saw that he had a knife," the woman recalled. The attacker jumped into her car and began stabbing the victim. "Bear in mind, my mum is in the front seat. He was furiously stabbed in the back seat of the car."
The woman's quick thinking likely saved the victim's life. "It was only because I was in an automatic car that my instant reaction was to put my foot down and that knocked the attacker out of my door," she explained. The attackers fled with the victim's e-scooter while she drove the bleeding man to safety and called for medical help.
Police Investigation
Merseyside Police arrested a 17-year-old on suspicion of wounding with intent, robbery, and drug possession. Detective Inspector Sarah Wilkinson said: "We take all reports of knives being used in our community extremely seriously and a 17 year old boy has been arrested in connection with this incident. The use of knives on our streets can have tragic consequences and will not be tolerated."
The victim was discharged from Aintree Hospital after treatment. A police officer told the woman that her intervention "pretty much saved his life." She described the traumatic experience as "just a horrific attack for me and my mum to witness" and likened it to "something out of a horror movie."
