Elon Musk's social media platform X is taking action to comply with UK law. This follows fierce criticism over its AI chatbot Grok generating sexualized images. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer informed MPs of the development, describing the issue as "disgusting" and "shameful" while making clear the government would not back down.

The controversy erupted after reports emerged that Grok was allowing users to manipulate images of women and children to sexualize them. The AI tool, which is limited to X's paying subscribers, sparked outrage and prompted media watchdog Ofcom to launch an independent investigation on Monday.

Starmer told the House: "To update the House, I have been informed this morning that X is acting to ensure full compliance with UK law. If so, that is welcome, but we're not going to back down, and they must act. We will take the necessary measures. We will strengthen existing laws and prepare for legislation if it needs to go further, and Ofcom will continue its independent investigation."

Government response

Technology Secretary Liz Kendall condemned X for "monetising abuse" by restricting Grok's image-generating function to paying subscribers. She pledged full ministerial support for Ofcom to take action against X, including a potential ban in the UK if changes are not made.

New legislation making it a criminal offense to create or request non-consensual intimate images comes into force this week. This adds legal weight to the government's stance.

Musk's defense

Elon Musk defended the platform on Wednesday. He claimed "its operating principle" was "to obey the laws of any given country or state" and that it "would refuse to produce anything illegal."

He stated: "I am not aware of any naked underage images generated by Grok." Musk attributed any problematic outputs to adversarial hacking, adding: "There may be times when adversarial hacking of Grok prompts does something unexpected. If that happens, we fix the bug immediately."
