A former senior police officer has been selected to fill an Ulster Unionist Party Assembly seat in North Antrim. Jon Burrows was chosen after an internal party process on Tuesday to replace Colin Crawford, who resigned earlier this year.

Crawford had served as MLA for less than a year before stepping down from the role. The North Antrim seat was previously held by former health minister Robin Swann, who left Stormont last year following his election as MP for South Antrim.

Police career spans two decades

Burrows brings more than 20 years of experience with the Police Service of Northern Ireland to his new political role. During his career, he served as Foyle area commander and held the rank of chief inspector.

It is understood that two other candidates were interviewed during the selection process. The Ulster Unionist Party confirmed the appointment followed "a rigorous internal selection process with independent oversight".

Party welcomes new appointment

In a statement, the Ulster Unionist Party thanked Crawford for his "dedicated service to the Assembly over the last year" and wished him well with future endeavours. Brian Thompson, chairman of the North Antrim UUP Association, described Burrows as an "exceptional individual".

Thompson said: "I want to start by thanking Colin for all of his efforts over the last year and wish him well. We also want to thank all those who put their name forward and took part in the selection process."

He added: "We are delighted to have Jon on board. Jon is an exceptional individual who has been appointed as the new MLA for North Antrim, and we look forward to working with him over the coming weeks and months ahead."
