HSBC's banking app crashed this morning, leaving thousands of customers unable to access their accounts across the UK. The outage began around 11:17 BST and has affected both mobile and online banking services for the major high street bank.
More than 4,000 issues have been logged on DownDetector, with 62 per cent of users reporting problems with mobile banking and 30 per cent struggling with online banking. Customers attempting to access their accounts are encountering error messages stating "Sorry your information isn't available right now. Please try again later."
Frustrated customers have taken to social media to voice their concerns about the disruption. One user asked: "Your mobile app and online services are down, and online payments I make are being declined. What's going on?" Another customer criticised the bank's communication, saying: "Service status says everything is fine - yet you've already had hundreds of messages saying that the app isn't working."
Bank's Response
HSBC confirmed the technical issues in an official statement posted at 11:45am. The bank said: "We understand some customers are having issues accessing banking services right now. We're really sorry and are investigating as a matter of urgency. We will share an update as soon as possible."
The outage has also affected First Direct customers, according to reports from multiple sources. Both services appear to be experiencing similar technical difficulties, preventing users from completing essential banking transactions during business hours.
Alternative Options
Customers needing urgent banking assistance can call HSBC's Customer Services team on 03457 404404. Physical bank branches remain open and unaffected by the digital service disruption.
Those who incur costs due to the outage may be entitled to compensation from the bank. Customers unable to pay bills or file tax returns could potentially claim back any fines received as a direct result of the service failure, though recovery isn't guaranteed.
