Cristian Romero has signed a new four-year contract with Tottenham, extending his stay until 2029. The 27-year-old defender has also been appointed as the club's new captain following Son Heung-min's departure to LAFC.

The Argentine captained Tottenham in their Europa League final victory last season, having made seven appearances in the winning campaign. The triumph ended a 17-year trophy drought at the north London club.

Trophy ambitions driving commitment

"After winning the Europa League, it is like a special season now," Romero explained. "We want to win. Why not win again this season? Another trophy with the club is important for everyone."

The defender spurned interest from Atletico Madrid during the summer to commit his future to Tottenham. Despite previously saying he was "open" to the Spanish move, Romero chose to extend his stay in north London.

Special family moment as captain

Romero led Tottenham out with his young son for Saturday's Premier League opener against Burnley, which Spurs won 3-0. "First time as captain, it was incredible for me. Going to the pitch with my son [on Saturday], it was special for me," he said.

"The last two weeks, first captain, and now sign the contract with the club. For me it is a fantastic decision. I love football, I love this club, it was special for me going on the pitch with him."

Commitment to club and supporters

The defender expressed his gratitude to Tottenham's fanbase and his determination to help the team achieve more success. "My message to the fans is thank you for amazing support every day and at every match. It is important for the team," he said.

"I am very happy here in the club. For me, this club is the best in the world. I love football, I love this club."
