TSB has apologised to customers after its mobile banking app and online services went down on Monday afternoon. The outage left users unable to access their accounts or view their finances during a busy period at the start of the month.

More than 1,000 customers reported problems on the DownDetector platform during the afternoon. Hundreds of users were impacted by the technical difficulties, which prevented access to digital banking services.

Banking services in branches and over the telephone continued to work as normal during the outage. Customers could still access their accounts and conduct transactions through these traditional channels.

Customer frustrations

Customers took to social media to express frustration about being unable to make important payments at the start of the month. Many said the timing of the outage was particularly inconvenient for essential transactions and bill payments.

A TSB spokesman said: "We're aware some customers are experiencing issues with our mobile banking app and internet banking. We're sorry for any inconvenience and are working to resolve this as soon as possible."

Banking sector issues

The problems come just a week after rival HSBC also apologised to customers for an outage affecting its online services. The incidents highlight ongoing challenges with digital banking infrastructure across the sector.

TSB, which serves around five million customers, is currently preparing for a £2.65 billion takeover by fellow high street lender Santander. The merger is set to create the UK's third largest bank by the number of personal current accounts.
