Police arrested two men in connection with the attempted murder of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell, who was shot several times while packing up after coaching a youth football team in 2023. Officers detained the suspects, aged 37 and 73, under the Terrorism Act on Tuesday evening.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) arrested the men in the Ardboe area. Officers took both to the Musgrave Serious Crime Suite for questioning.
The attack and its aftermath
In February 2023, Mr Caldwell was shot several times while off duty and with his young son, packing up after coaching a youth football team. The New IRA later claimed responsibility for the attack.
Several people have previously appeared in court charged with offences linked to the shooting. The investigation has continued since the attack almost three years ago.
Recovery and recognition
Mr Caldwell has since retired from the PSNI on medical grounds. In 2024, the Princess Royal presented him with the King's Police Medal for distinguished services in the police service at Buckingham Palace.
Speaking at the time, he said he was recovering well. "That's thanks to the medical teams and thanks to the support from family and friends, and from my wife and my son," he said.
