Eight pubs ceased trading every week during the first half of 2025, as concern grows over the future of the iconic British establishments.

Across England and Wales, 209 pubs were demolished or converted to other uses by June. A total of 2,283 pubs have permanently disappeared from England and Wales since the start of 2020.

Many former drinking establishments have been converted into residential properties or commercial spaces as operators struggle with mounting financial pressures, including increases in the national minimum wage and national insurance contributions.

The hospitality sector faced a further blow in April, when a business rates discount was slashed from 60 per cent to 25 per cent.

The Daily Star reports that small pub business rates bills have soared by 140 per cent, jumping from £3,938 to £9,451 due to the discount reduction. The sector now faces an additional £215 million in tax bills as a direct result of the relief cut.

The South East experienced the highest regional impact with 31 pub closures in the first half of 2025, according to the Daily Star. The total number of pubs in England and Wales stands at 38,780, including vacant premises.

The British Beer and Pub Association is leading calls for immediate government intervention to prevent further closures. Industry leaders are urging ministers to implement urgent tax reforms and supportive measures in the upcoming autumn budget.
