Wedgwood will halt production at its Staffordshire factory for up to 90 days starting September 29th. The move puts 70 workers on temporary leave as owner Fiskars Group responds to declining demand.

The production pause at the Barlaston site represents a "short-term measure" to address elevated inventory levels. Factory tours at the World Of Wedgwood tourist destination will also be suspended until early January 2026.

Company response to market pressures

"This short-term measure is being taken to address elevated inventory levels caused by lower consumer demand in some of our key markets," a Fiskars spokesperson said. The company emphasised that "Barlaston and its community are of key importance to Fiskars Group and Wedgwood."

The factory produces high-end and bespoke ceramics, including handcrafted pieces in fine bone china and signature Jasperware. Skilled artisans continue using techniques pioneered by founding designer Josiah Wedgwood, who was born in Burslem, Staffordshire, in 1730.

Heritage and craftsmanship focus

"This living tradition reflects our commitment to craftsmanship, the value of Made in England, and Barlaston's enduring role in our heritage and operations," the spokesperson added. The company maintains its connection to traditional pottery methods despite current market challenges.

The pottery and ceramics sector has faced significant pressure from rising costs and energy bills in recent years. Several firms have collapsed, including the nearly 200-year-old Royal Stafford company in February.
