The Met Office has issued a "danger to life" weather warning for heavy rain affecting 32 areas across south-west England and Wales from Monday evening. The yellow alert, active from 6pm Monday until 6pm Tuesday, warns that some regions could see more than half of December's average rainfall in just 24 hours.

Forecasters predict 20-40mm of rain across most affected areas, with 60-80mm expected over Dartmoor and high ground in south Wales. The most exposed hills could see up to 100mm, the Met Office warns. The heavy rain poses particular risks because ground across south Wales and south-west England is already saturated from recent downpours.

Low Pressure System Approaches

Steven Keates, the Met Office's deputy chief meteorologist, said: «A deepening area of low pressure will approach the UK from the south-west later on Monday, bringing with it heavy rain and strong winds, which are likely to affect the UK between late Monday and early Wednesday.»

He added: «At present, the exact track, depth, and timings of this low are uncertain, which makes it harder to determine where will be most impacted by strong winds and/or heavy rain. This system has the potential to cause disruption, and severe weather warnings are likely to be issued over the weekend as details become clearer. We therefore urge people to keep up-to-date with the latest Met Office forecast.»

Strengthening southerly winds will accompany the rain, potentially worsening impacts. The Met Office warns of potential flooding, travel disruption, and challenging driving conditions.

Weekend Already Wet

The warning comes as the UK faces a wet and windy weekend. Heavy rain lingered across north-eastern Scotland on Saturday, while blustery showers affected much of the country. The Met Office said bands of showers would be most persistent across south Wales and south-west England, some heavy with occasional thunder.

Thirty-six flood warnings and 113 flood alerts were already in place across England, Scotland and Wales on Saturday morning. A separate band of rain is forecast to sweep north-eastwards across the country on Sunday, with persistent spells expected in northern areas.

The affected areas include Hampshire, Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset, Bristol, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, and the Isles of Scilly in England. In Wales, warnings cover Cardiff, Swansea, Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Powys, and multiple other authorities. Herefordshire in the West Midlands is also included.

Northern Ireland, north-east England and south-east Scotland have the best chance of drier weather this weekend, though temperatures will remain mild despite brisk winds.
