A massive fire broke out at a derelict building on Boghead Road in Lenzie on Friday night, forcing emergency evacuations and a major firefighting response. Nine fire appliances were dispatched to tackle the blaze, which began around 10.38pm on August 22.
The building was the former Campsie View School, an additional needs facility that served 100 pupils before closing in August 2023, BBC reports. Huge orange flames engulfed the structure as firefighters used height appliances to battle the inferno.
Police evacuated multiple nearby properties as a safety precaution, with some residents left waiting outside in the cold while authorities arranged temporary accommodation. One resident said: "We were evacuated and left sitting out in the cold while they found somewhere for us to go."
Weekend-long emergency response
Firefighters warned that low water pressure could extend the fire's duration through the weekend. The resident added: "Firefighters told us that due low water pressure the blaze could be burning all weekend."
Emergency crews worked through the night and into Saturday morning to contain the blaze. No injuries were reported from the incident.
Road closures and safety measures
Police implemented road closures on Spruce Drive, Heather Drive, Heather Place and Boghead Road, with diversions expected to remain in place through the weekend. Authorities advised nearby residents to keep windows and doors closed and asked drivers to avoid the area.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson confirmed nine appliances were deployed to extinguish the fire at the derelict building. Police Scotland said emergency services responded to reports of the fire around 10.50pm and coordinated the evacuation procedures.
