Discount retailer Lidl is creating up to 640 new jobs as part of plans to open 19 stores across the UK over the next eight weeks. The German-owned supermarket chain is pushing ahead with major expansion efforts as it seeks to win more customers and grow its market share.
The company is investing £43 million to revamp more than 70 existing shops alongside the new openings. Store overhauls include new tills, larger freezers for an expanded product range, and energy-saving features such as chillers using natural refrigerants and smart lighting systems to reduce electricity use.
Richard Taylor, chief real estate officer at Lidl's UK operations, said: «We're starting the new year as we mean to go on, with a major investment that reinforces our commitment to delivering the best experience for customers and creating a positive impact for the communities we serve.»
He added: «With this push, we're set on winning more shoppers across the nation and claiming an even bigger share of the market.»
Strong Christmas performance
The expansion comes after Lidl reported a 10% surge in Christmas sales. The retailer achieved turnover of more than £1.1 billion during the four weeks leading up to Christmas Eve.
Lidl currently ranks as Britain's sixth-largest grocery chain according to experts at Worldpanel. The company has been gaining market share and could potentially overtake rival Morrisons, which currently holds fifth place.
Last year marked a milestone when Lidl opened its 1,000th store. The company is targeting around 40 additional sites by February 28.
The new stores will open in locations including Calne, Brough, Basildon, Birmingham, Burntwood, Chester, Dereham, Havant, Hereford, Horley, Hucknall, Stamford Hill, Walworth Road, Reading, Royal Wootton Bassett, Salisbury, Sandford, Sutton high street, and Tring. The openings will establish Lidl's presence in previously unserved parts of the UK.
