Veterans could receive up to £12,471 annually through a little-known government scheme that many eligible service personnel remain unaware of. The War Pension Scheme (WPS) provides compensation for veterans with injuries or illnesses caused or worsened by military service before April 6, 2005.

The scheme offers two types of awards based on the severity of disablement. Veterans with less than 20 per cent disablement receive a tax-free lump sum gratuity, while those with more than 20 per cent disablement qualify for ongoing tax-free weekly or monthly pension payments.

Assessment and eligibility

A medical advisor assesses disablement levels on a scale from one to 100 per cent, covering both physical and mental health conditions. The comprehensive evaluation determines the appropriate level of compensation under the parliamentary-set payment structure.

The Ministry of Defence and Veterans UK said: "The rules of the scheme and the value of the payments awarded are set by Parliament. The value of the payments increase each year in line with the consumer price index. The Armed Forces Compensation Scheme provides compensation for any injury, illness or death which is caused by service on or after 6 April 2005."

Application process

Veterans can apply online through the gov.uk website or request paper forms by calling the Veterans UK Helpline on 0808 1914 218. Applicants need their doctor's details, bank information, National Insurance number, service dates, and current benefits information.

Special procedures apply for UK Special Forces personnel. Those who served with UKSF must contact the MOD A Block Disclosure Cell before making a claim and may need Express Prior Authority in Writing. They should email [email protected] explaining they want to apply for Armed Forces Compensation or a War Pension.

Current rates and coverage

War Pension rates remain valid until March 2026, with annual increases linked to consumer price index. The Armed Forces Compensation Scheme provides separate coverage for service-related injuries, illnesses or deaths occurring on or after April 6, 2005.
