A 26-year-old British man has died after being pulled unconscious from the sea off Lindos, the historic tourist capital of Rhodes. The incident occurred on August 16 while the man was swimming in the popular Greek resort area.

Emergency services rushed to the scene but were unable to save him. He was pronounced dead at the nearby Archangelos Health Centre despite first aid efforts.

Investigation launched

Greek police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. The island's port authority confirmed an incident involving a young foreigner being pulled from the sea, with an autopsy ordered by the Forensic Medical Service.

The UK Foreign Office said: "We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities."

Pattern of concern

The death forms part of a troubling pattern of British fatalities in Greece this summer. A 78-year-old British woman was found dead in a hotel pool in Crete, leading to three arrests on suspicion of negligent manslaughter including a 21-year-old lifeguard and two hotel managers.

Two weeks earlier, Craig Bloomer, 54, from Wolverhampton died in a moped accident near Agios Mattheos village in Corfu while on a family holiday. The grandfather had been described as the "happiest" he had been since his wife's death from cancer two years ago.

Extreme conditions

Express reports that Greece is experiencing dangerous 40C heatwaves with wildfires and tourist evacuations from Chios and Zakynthos. The extreme weather conditions are affecting safety across the popular British holiday destination islands.

Lindos, where the latest incident occurred, is renowned for its ancient acropolis and historic significance as Rhodes' tourist capital.
