Six more men have been arrested at Birmingham Airport following violent disorder during Aston Villa's Europa League clash against BSC Young Boys at Villa Park. The arrests bring the total to eight in connection with Thursday night's trouble, which saw police officers assaulted and Aston Villa forward Donyell Malen struck on the head by a thrown object.
West Midlands Police confirmed the six men were detained at the airport on Friday afternoon. All were arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and violent disorder. Two other away fans had already been arrested during the match on Thursday night on suspicion of affray and assaulting a police officer.
The violence erupted in the lower tier of the Doug Ellis Stand when Aston Villa took the lead in the Europa League fixture, which ended 2-1 to the home side. Young Boys supporters threw broken seats and coins at police and players. Dozens of officers in riot gear were deployed to contain the disorder.
Investigation underway
Superintendent Paul Minor said: «The majority of the crowd was in good spirit, but unfortunately, a small minority of away fans caused violence and disrupted the game.» He confirmed officers are reviewing body-worn video and CCTV footage from the stadium.
Pattern of trouble
The Swiss club has faced sanctions before for supporter misconduct. Young Boys were fined 28,250 euros for similar issues at Manchester City two years ago. They also received a fine of around 18,000 euros for the use of pyrotechnics at Celtic in February.
